2024 Overseas Player: Maximus Petrie

North East Cheshire is pleased to announce that Maximus Petrie from Johnsonville Cricket Club in New Zealand will be the club’s overseas player for the 2024 season. Max is an established talent in the Cricket Wellington competition, playing in the Premier Grade which acts as the pathway to the Wellington Firebirds First Class setup. The 22 year-old is the son of former professional cricketer Richard Petrie who represented the Black Caps in 12 ODIs, alongside a domestic First Class career with both Canterbury and Wellington.

Max has received representative honours with Wellington City and was selected for Te-Whanganui-a-Tara (Māori Wellington) in the inaugural National T20 Māori Cricket Tournament in 2023. This was primarily achieved on the back of a strong 2022/23 season for Johnsonville where finished as the club’s top wicket-taker, returning best two-day figures of 5-17 as part of a match haul of 9-64.

He has backed that up in the current 2023/24 domestic campaign as his accurate right-arm pace with the new ball has continued to cause problems for opposition batters. He particularly excelled in the Ewen Chatfield One Day competition, finishing this portion of the season second in the overall wicket charts with a career-best return of 6-29 along the way.

While batting opportunities have been more scarce, Max has also shown capability and adaptability with the willow. His late order T20 hitting is capable of clearing the ropes on the larger southern hemisphere grounds while he’s also shown the ability to knuckle down and bat time in the longer formats. Max also boasts existing overseas experience having played a season in Vancouver in the British Columbia Mainland Cricket League.

The club is confident Max possesses the skills to make the most of English conditions and will be a great addition to the Jets in 2024. We wish him and Johnsonville the best of luck in the remainder of the New Zealand domestic seasons and look forward to welcoming him to the club in April.
